Crowns
Crowns are often the best way to save a tooth and strengthen it. A crown fits over a existing tooth that has been adjusted. Then it is cemented onto the adjusted natural tooth, this means that once in place they’re there for a long time and will mean that your teeth will both look and function naturally.
A crown is commonly used to cover or cap a damaged or broken tooth. There are also many other reasons to use a crown over a tooth.
- Replace a large filling when there isn’t enough tooth remaining
- Restore a broken tooth
- Cover a discoloured or poorly shaped tooth
- Cover and protect a tooth that has had root canal treatment
- Protect a weak tooth from breaking
- Cover a dental implant
- Protect a cracked tooth from splintering
Crown can be made from porcelain, gold and metal alloys or a combination of both materials. Porcelain is more aesthetic and can be made to match the colour of the natural teeth. While gold is used for its strength, hardness and durability. Gold is especially useful for the molars which must withstand forces of grinding and crushing. We also commonly use porcelain crowns with alloy inside to have the best of both, aesthetic and strength. Dr Chang will discuss the different types of crown that can be used and discuss the best option for you and your teeth.
